January 2026 in the Kannada Panchanga

On the English calendar, January is the first month. In Kannada Panchanga practice (Southern Amanta), mid-January is dominated by the solar festival Makara Sankranti — when the Sun is traditionally said to enter Makara — celebrated alongside Pongal / harvest themes in many Karnataka homes. The lunar month names around this period often sit in Pausha–Magha; what matters for planning is the civil dates below plus your family priest’s sankalpa sheet.

January is also when office leave for Republic Day stacks with school holidays in some districts. If relatives travel for Sankranti, book tickets early — markets for ellu-bella and sugarcane peak in the days before the 14th.

Makara Sankranti & Pongal (14 January 2026)

Makara Sankranti is one of the few widely known solar festivals in an otherwise lunar-heavy calendar. Families exchange sesame–jaggery (ellu-bella), fly kites in some regions, and cook festive rice dishes. Kanuma (15 Jan on our list) continues the harvest mood for communities that observe it.

Practical tip: treat the 14th as a social + ritual day. Rahu Kala still applies by weekday if your family checks it before travel, but Sankranti hospitality usually outranks stopwatch muhurat for casual visits.

Republic Day & other January observances

Republic Day (26 Jan) is a national holiday. Pair it with the month’s Ekadashi names (including Jaya Ekadashi later in the month) and Amavasya / Hunnime rows in the festival list. New Year’s Day (1 Jan) appears as a national observance on our table even though it is not a traditional Hindu lunar new year — Ugadi in March is the Kannada New Year.

Marriage muhurat in January 2026

No Shubh Muhurat is listed for January because of Shukra Moodha (Venus combustion) in the tradition we follow. Couples should not force a wedding booking this month “because the hall is free.” Use Marriage Muhurat 2026 and the explainer why months close. February typically reopens options.

January FAQ

Is Sankranti the same date every year?

It stays mid-January but the exact civil date can shift slightly across years; for 2026 we list 14 January.

Why no weddings?

Traditional Shukra Moodha filter — not a legal ban. Ritual vivaha planning follows your pandit.
