Choghadiya | ಚೋಘಡಿಯಾ

ಶುಭ ಮತ್ತು ಅಶುಭ ಸಮಯ — Know which daytime periods are good or bad for starting work, travel, or ceremonies. Bangalore IST, approximate timings.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya (ಚೋಘಡಿಯಾ) is a simple way to divide the day into eight time slots. Each slot has a name and is either ಶುಭ (auspicious) or ಅಶುಭ (inauspicious). People check it before starting travel, new work, business, or ceremonies so they begin during a good period.

In short: The day (sunrise to sunset) is split into 8 equal parts. Each part gets a name like Amrit, Shubh, Labh (good) or Rog, Kaal, Udveg (avoid). The order of these names changes by weekday. So on Monday the first period might be Labh (good), on Tuesday it might be Udveg (avoid).

Today’s Choghadiya (approximate)

Below is today’s order of periods for daytime. Timings assume sunrise ~6:00 AM and sunset ~6:00 PM (Bangalore). Each slot is about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Exact times depend on actual sunrise/sunset. For precise timings, use a daily Panchanga or Choghadiya calculator.

Weekday-wise Choghadiya (daytime order)

Use this table to see which period (1 to 8) is which type on each weekday. Period 1 = first slot after sunrise, Period 8 = last slot before sunset. For Bangalore, with sunrise ~6 AM and sunset ~6 PM, approximate times are:

  • Period 1: 6:00 AM – 7:30 AM  |  Period 2: 7:30 – 9:00  |  Period 3: 9:00 – 10:30  |  Period 4: 10:30 – 12:00 PM
  • Period 5: 12:00 – 1:30 PM  |  Period 6: 1:30 – 3:00  |  Period 7: 3:00 – 4:30  |  Period 8: 4:30 – 6:00 PM

When to use Choghadiya

  • Travel — Start a journey during Shubh, Labh, or Amrit.
  • Business — Sign deals, start new work, or important meetings in Shubh periods.
  • Ceremonies — Griha pravesh, vehicle purchase, or other rituals are often planned in Amrit or Shubh.
  • Daily work — Starting something new (job, project, purchase) is considered better in auspicious slots.

Avoid starting important or new tasks during Rog, Kaal, and Udveg. Use Chal (neutral) only for travel or routine work if needed.

Worked example — starting travel

You want to leave home mid-morning on a Thursday. On the approximate 6 AM–6 PM model, 9:00–10:30 is Period 3. Check Thursday’s third cell in the weekday table. If it shows Amrit or Shubh, many families are comfortable starting then. If it shows Udveg or Kaal, they wait for the next favourable label — unless a fixed train time forces a conflict. In conflicts, practicality wins; simply avoid stacking other sensitive factors when you can.

Worked example — business signing

Signing a lease on Friday at 11:00 AM: Friday’s daytime Choghadiya may show a favourable name for that slot, but Friday Rahu Kala on our diary table is 10:30 AM–12:00 PM. Families who honour both systems often wait until after noon. Choghadiya and Rahu Kala answer related but different questions — read Rahu Kala vs Yamaganda vs Gulika.

Choghadiya vs marriage muhurat

Choghadiya helps choose a portion of a day for travel or work. It does not open a month that tradition keeps closed for weddings (Pitru Paksha, Navaratri, Shukra Moodha). For vivaha, start with Marriage Muhurat 2026, then refine the hour with a pandit — optionally using Choghadiya as a secondary preference.

Night Choghadiya

Some apps publish sunset-to-sunrise tables. This page focuses on the daytime order most printed Kannada/English diaries emphasise. If your ceremony is late evening and your priest uses night Choghadiya, follow that sheet for the hour.

Important note

Exact Choghadiya timings depend on sunrise and sunset for each date and place. This page uses a fixed 6 AM–6 PM day for Bangalore as an approximate reference. For today’s exact timings in your city, use a daily Panchanga or an online Choghadiya calculator.

On this site you can also check Rahu Kala and Marriage Muhurat for 2026.

FAQ — Choghadiya

Is Chal / Char bad?

Neutral. Acceptable for routine travel; not the first choice for a wedding hour.

Do I need Choghadiya for every errand?

No. Medical emergencies and immovable exam/flight times take priority. Use Choghadiya when you have flexibility.

Why do two apps disagree?

Different sunrise models and whether they include night tables. Prefer one consistent source for a given ceremony.
